Eight rooms, fifteen camera signals and the audio of each scenario, recorded together.

Simulation training at the TU München clinical simulation centre
Training runs on full-scale simulators that breathe, bleed and speak; the recording has to keep up.

The challenge

The learning and simulation centre at the university hospital in Munich trains doctors and healthcare staff on full-scale simulators that reproduce pulse, blood pressure and breathing — and, through a tutor's microphone, speech. Two control desks have to steer and watch what happens in the rooms; the training has to be shown live in several rooms at once; and every session has to be recorded so that tutors and participants can analyse it together in the debriefing rooms. Because several groups train at the same time, the audio had to be shaped per scenario rather than mixed once for the building, and a large number of cameras had to be driven in parallel.

What Reach deployed

A CM800 recording and streaming server processes 15 live video signals grouped into eight camera groups — one group per room — and records each room's video together with that room's audio. Audio is the other half of the design: headsets and room microphones from Clockaudio feed a BIAMP AudiaFLEX matrix, so each scenario gets the mix it needs, and Community DS-5 speakers carry speech into the simulation, control and debriefing rooms. CUE touch panels give tutors a simple way to select a room scenario. A user and rights management layer decides who may call up a stored session.

How it works

  1. Each room records as a group: its cameras plus its own audio, never the building's mix.
  2. Tutors select the scenario on a touch panel, which sets sources, routing and audio for that room.
  3. The control desks see every room and can send any session live to the debriefing rooms.
  4. Stored sessions are access-controlled, so training material stays with the people entitled to it.
Our advantage over other simulation centres is clearly the number of rooms that can run in parallel, and an audio system that can be shaped to whatever the scenario demands. In simulation that is invaluable. prodyTel supported us competently through the complexity of the build.Dr. med. Dominik Hinzmann, TU München
